In Decree 16/2020/ND-CP guiding the implementation of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality, the Government has detailed regulations on a number of conditions for naturalization in Vietnam.
Specifically:
- Must know Vietnamese enough to integrate into the Vietnamese community: Able to listen, speak, read, and write in Vietnamese suitable to the living and working environment of the applicant for Vietnamese citizenship;
- Must be permanently residing in Vietnam and have been issued a Permanent Residence Card by a competent Vietnamese police agency;
The permanent residence period in Vietnam of a person applying for Vietnamese nationality is calculated from the date that person is granted a Permanent Residence Card.
- Ability to ensure the life in Vietnam of the person applying for Vietnamese nationality as proven by the person's assets, appropriate source of income or the guarantee of an organization or individual in Vietnam.
In addition, the Decree also stipulates that in case you apply for Vietnamese citizenship but still want to keep your foreign nationality, you must meet the following conditions:
- Be eligible for Vietnamese citizenship;
- Have special contributions to Vietnam and naturalization in Vietnam but still retaining foreign nationality is beneficial to the State of Vietnam;
- The person's request to retain foreign nationality when acquiring Vietnamese nationality is in accordance with the law of that country;
- Renunciation of foreign nationality results in that person's rights abroad being affected...
This Decree was issued on February 3, 2020, effective from March 20, 2020.
